OS: 7.1 VMS alpha
CPU/Ram: unkown
Comment:
Hey, I have little experince with VMS and I need to install on this system. Well actually reinstall it. Because I can get the UI to load up (it is an digital alpha box running VMS 7.1), enter the username, press enter then the screen goes black. Except you can still see the mouse pointer.

So unless anyone knows a fix to that problem I figure the best option is a reinstall. It seems the install is pretty strait forward, the only thing I can not get is the Decnet node, PAL, and the alloclass values. How do you find out these values?

Thanks a ton

What stupid MS Windows mentality is this, reinstall if it doesnt work...
And you probably only have to restart the X-windows server with :
@SYS$MANAGER:DECW$STARTUP RESTART

It sounds like your graphics card may not be compatible with or may not be configured for your monitor. Has your system worked previously? You really shouldn't need to EVER reinstall VMS, since it is much more robust than anything else out there. If you get past the USERNAME/PASSWORD, then VMS is running just fine. Do you have a LOGIN.COM defined that is attempting to bring up a program at startup? Try logging in using another account.

I hope this helps.

Tiberius
