Hello:
We have a DEC Alpha Server 400 running Open VMS ver.6.2-1H3. The old tape drive has died, and I've located a SONY SDT-S 10000 (PCBacker)that we can purchase. However, our tech support doesn't know if this particular tape backup is compatible with Open VMS.
Many thanks for your input or suggestions. I have virtually zero VMS knowledge.
Thank you,

Sony DDS SDT-S 10000/N is a DDS4 SCSI drive, and in principle should work with VMS.
Check the SCSI controller vs. drive model: as far I can see the SDT-S 10000/N has UW SCSI (68 pin), the Alpha400 probably has scsi2 (50 pin): so You need an adapter cable, and can't use the full drive speed.Your particular VERY ancient VMS version may not support the DDS4 density, and therefore can use it only as a generic tape drive.
Anyhow: 4mm tapes are not really good backup/archive media.
There are better alternatives from Sony or Quantum like AIT or DLT drives.

Joseph:
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes, the adapter cable is needed and in hand. Wasn't sure about the tapes, but know it could be an issue. Will look at your other suggested options.
Much obliged to you!
