Comment:
Have a Alpha system running Hobbyist VMS 7.3. Download included Compaq C and Fortran. The compiler images are not active (i.e., no result when I attempt to compile a program--e.g., using CC command). Any help in activating these products would be greatly appreciated!

Hilliard,

What do you mean "The Download included C and FORTRAN"? They should be separate kits (files) which need to be installed. You will also needd the license keys, but I presume that you have already obtained and loaded them.

If you can clarify what you have, I can probably sort it out with you.

Bob,

Thanks for lending a hand. I received and installed a while back the Open VMS Hobbyist CD (for Alpha) which was advertised to include Compaq C and Compaq Fortran. During installation, I did not notice Compaq C and Compaq Fortran in the list of layered products that came with the CD. The layered products included DecNet,TCPIP, DecWindows, etc. Was I supposed to receive a separate CD with Compaq C and Compaq Fortran or perhaps they were inadvertently not included on the disk? I did load all the Hobbyist licenses. Perhaps, I just need to run VMS install--the Hobbyist CD installation only loaded the O/S and basic layered products--DecNet, etc. I was checking to see if anyone out there had a similar experience with the Open VMS Alpha Hobbyist CD (V 3.0) install.

Thanks again for helping out and Merry Christmas.

Hilliard

Hilliard,

The baseline OpenVMS installation procedure does not install products beyond the baseline. I forget the exact list, but my recollection is (I don't have media loaded at this instant) that the list includes the base OS, DECwindows (XWindows), DECnet, and IP. Languages are definitely not on that list.

What you want to do is look at the directory structure on the disk. You should find both the kits for the other included items. Once you find the kits:

- C uses VMSINSTAL, follow the directions on the HP www site at http://h71000.www7.hp.com/commercial/c/docs/IGALP.html

- FORTRAN uses the PRODUCT INSTALL command, the notes for installing it can be found at http://h18009.www1.hp.com/fortran/docs/vms-um/hpfvig76.htm

Caution: I do not remember whether there was a change in the installation procedures between the date of your CDROM and the versions reflected in the online Docs, locate the appropriate files (the C kit will be in files named "CC*.xxx" and the FORTRAN files will be of filetype PCSI).

Good luck and my wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!

Like Bob says: you need to install the languages AND install (and load) the licenses.

C comes in a VMSINSTALL kit (CCvvv.a, CCvvv.b etc, where vvv is the version number 065 is latest, AFAIK).
Fortran coms as a PROD kit (FORvvv.PCSI), I think 7.5.0 is latest.
