No, OpenVMS is not an emulation of anything. As far as I remember, it was developed by Digital Equipment Corporation back around 1971 to run on their VAX (and later AXP) set of mid-size computers. It is a full-blown operating system with network services, database support, and command-line user interface. I spent several years working with it and yet to find anything close to it in reliability or speed. It has a tremendous help system for users. DEC used to have a large number of classes. In the last few years, Compaq Computer Co. started supporting the system. There is a large user group called DECUS and a tremendous software library available. I would highly recommend it for industrial environments such as manufacturing.
