WordXP Inserting Symbol

I've been inserting symbols into text--Latin Extended-B--which I've done before without a problem, although not the same symbols. Now they appear on my screen and with the print preview, but some of them (not all) are not printing. I deleted and retyped them. I shut down my computer and rebooted. I reinstalled OfficeXP as a repair. I still can't print them. The spaces are blank. I also tried printing them in a new document without success. Any help?

I've seen that happen before. I think one solution is to look up the key combination (alt + a string of numbers--Character Map is helpful for this) for that character and insert it that way. I'm pretty sure those will always print.

That was a good idea, but it didn't work! I knew that the driver had been updated, so I didn't think it was the driver, but I called HP and they had me change the driver from an HP LaserJet1200 (my printer) to an HP LaserJet 4Plus. Seems to have solved the problem.
I am intrigued by using Character Map though. What is it and how do I use it? (I did find the number code for the symbols to type in followed by Alt + X, or I can create a shortcut.)
