Word97 pictures show up as red

This problem is to do with Microsoft Word 97. While typing a rather long document I had inserted numerous pictures through out, scanned as well as ones from the internet.
I have saved this document many times and have been working on it for about 2 months and have never had a problem before. Now only some of the pictures show up and the others just show up as a big red "X" across them. I also have these pictures saved elswhere on my desktop so I could retrieve them if need be.
Is there some sort of memory or picture limit to this program (Word97)? How do I get around this?
