Recently upgraded to Office 2000. Ready to switch back. Runs much slower and Word 2000 is doing something very aggravating. When I try to copy and paste anything from a web site or email into a Word document, down in the lower left status bar Word says accessing cnn.com or what ever site I got it from. One time someone sent me an email with some content from the Washington Post. There was no URL or anythng in the email. When I tried to copy parts of it into an email, Word hesitated, saying accessing washington.com. When it does this, my Zone Alarms pops up and says Word is trying to access the internet. If I don't let it access the internet, there will be a 10-15 second delay and then either the paste will complete or Word will just totally lock up. Is this some kind of spy routine Microsoft put in Word, so that if anyone uses any internet content in a Word Document, Word squeals on them and reports them back to the website? How can I stop Word from doing this? Also there are delays while Word says it is "requesting virus check". From who? and from what virus program or site. I run Norton AV and keep it updated. I do not need Word running all my stuff through some website for approval. I know I am sounding pretty paranoid, but really. Word 2000 is sure doing some suspicious and aggravating things.

I'm not sure if I can explain this right ...but here goes anyway..
If you look under Internet explorer properties> programs tab, you will likely see that in the HTML editor box is microsoft word. Your word processor uses html which is also what most webpages use..so your html editor (word 2000) has to access the net in order to copy/paste the stuff you want.
Basically you are just using your html editor to copy the webpage html code to your computer.
If you are doing copy/paste stuff...let it have access...otherwise it will just copy it in plain text or freeze up. I can't remember what exactly it's called but there is virus protection enabled in word, excel, etc. (Ahh yes macro protection) It is security feature in office and won't interfere with norton.
You can turn off the macro protection if ya want but I would not recommend it.
here shows ya howhttp://helpdesk.ua.edu/help/howto/macrovirus.html
From what I see you describe everything is ok.
If you want just tell zone alarm to remember next time you use program when it asks for access and it won't bother you again. Here is a little more info about macros security.

Hope this isn't all too confusing...as I sometimes get carried away.
Have a good day

Thanks, for the good explanation. I understand what you are saying. I guess Word 97 was doing the same thing, only it was not apparent. There was no delay, no status bar saying "accessing www.xyz.com" and Zone Alarms did not catch it or my settings for Word 97 allowed it. I do have Word 2K XXX'd out on Internet Access in ZA. This still causes Word 2K to hang during an internet paste and sometimes crash. Again if I had a faster processor the "bump" may not be noticeable. That was really strange when I tried a cut and paste from an email, that had no URL, HTML or anything in it. There may have been a Washington Post Logo in it and that was HTML. Some how Word came up with www.washington.com and tried to go there to complete. That is not a viable URL. I guess when software does something I don't understand, paranoia sets in. Is it a virus or "big brother" LOL
