Word2003Pro conflict with Win7Ult64

Microsoft / Word 2003 pro

Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
I've made a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

When I open the ‘Full Screen’ view in Word 2003 Pro a small 'Close Full Screen' button appears on the page (just as it should). But when I close Full Screen again, the button doesn't go away: It freezes, and stays on the screen - even when I minimize Word. The only way to move it or get rid of it is to close Word.

There might be other errors, I've not yet explored the computer, only tried to make a unblemished install.

My PC is a Lenovo T500. Only other programs: ThinkVantage, Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 and Acronis True Image Home 2010. No other software than Office 2003. I've not yet worked on the PC or made any downloads.

(I’ve previously installed Office 2003 on the same machine with more programs installed. I had the same problem – even when I made the installation in Win XP SP3-compatibility mode. After that, I used Acronis True Image to ghost this original, very clean installation on to my Intel SSD drive in an attempt to isolate the problem.)

Is this an error in Win7 – or what could it be?

With Win7 Pro 64-bit and Word 2003 I cannot replicate your problem. Closing fullscreen by clicking the button also closes the button window.

Hi Nigel,

Thanks for checking. Then what in the world ...?

The 'Close full screen' button is, of course, actually, a tiny toolbar. I've discovered that all unattached Word toolbars opened in 'full screen mode' freeze when I revert to normal view.

Another issue is that Word can’t make autosave: Everytime it’s supposed to do this it shows a little box instead, saying autosave has been postponed and asks me to click ‘OK’.

I’ve tried to turn off my antivirus: It makes no difference.
My Lenovo T500 laptop is brand new and supposed to have been developed with Win7 in mind.
Only other program on my PC is Acronis True Image
I’ve installed and uninstalled Office 2003 five times: No difference
I have no other issues with my PC or Win7 installation.

Your puzzled friend, far away

The little toolbar has two lines, fullscreen and close fullscreen. The "fullscreen" line has a small dropdown list with the text "add or remove buttons" (the exact text may differ, since I don't use an English version). Here if you browse around you will find the alterantive "reset toolbar". Does resetting it fix your problem?

When Word has left Full Screen mode the toolbar is frozen: It can't be moved, and none of the buttons can be pressed.

I could try to reset the toolbars after returning to Full Screen-mode - when the toolbars work again, but I worry that resetting the toolbars only mean returning to their default settings for which are open and which are closed. I'm not fond of that, now that I have done a thorough customization of my Word window. (I haven't changed neither the 'Full Screen'-toolbar, nor the 'Visual Basic'-toolbar, which are the ones causing problems. And the problem was there before I customized my other Word settings.)
