Word Very Slow Opening Doc's

I have a problem with MS word in that when I open a document it appears quickly enough but the egg timer continues for between ½ minute and a minute before I can edit it. Also if I go to another application and then go back to word I again get the egg timer for a prolongued period before I can continue editing.

During the period of the egg timer the CPU is apparrently running at approx 50% (from task manager - performance).
