I am using Windows XP Home, MS Office 2000, MS Word 2002, and AVG Free Edition 7.0 (antivirus software). Every time I open my documents in MS Word, the program shows "requesting virus scan...". It's very time consuming when I work only on my PC. How can I turn off this function so it doesn't scan files when I open them and turn it on when I want? AVG 7.0 has a setting that allows users to turn off scanning "documents"; however, Word continues to request a virus scan everytime I open a document despite that I turned off the document scan in AVG 7.0.
Thank you!
MiKE

I suggest you ditch AVG in favour of a better (but still free) virus scanner. Avast Antivirus Home Edition. Online updates several times a week. Free registration (just give them your email address and they'll send you a serial code)And it doesn't scan Word documents everytime you open them!

Mike, have a look in AVG's options and see if there is a setting for "Office Plugins". If so turn it off and AVG should stop scanning your Word doc's. I don't use AVG but Norton has that setting which does the same thing.

I am having the same trouble as Michael, and the problem is NOT with the AVG program but with Word requesting the scan. In the intiial setup for Word, it asks for your anti-virus program location but does not offer more than a couple of the big name programs as options. It is not the fault of the a-v program like the norton plug-in, it is Word requesting a scan but cannot get at an a-v program within it's very limited list.

I observed the same "virus scan" message when opening Word03 on two different machines w/ two different AVs and firewalls (SystemSuite and Panda). Both firewalls reported that Word was trying to contact the Internet, and the delays started (on both machines) only after I denied Word's access request. Could good ol' MS be trying to sneak out to the Web again and causing the delays by repeated access requests that are denied? I've hunted through Word's options and could find nothing about Internet access, but it is clear that the Word attempts to do so.

Easy...
This is listed in Grisoft's Technical Support FAQ. ;-)
START/RUN
regsvr32 /u avgoff2k.dll
Click OKTo restart Office XP to request virus scans on opening documents..
START/RUN
regsvr32 avgoff2k.dll
Click OKIf you have problems with this do it from a command window in the directory where AVG was installed... usually c:\program files\grisoft\AVG7.
I've been using AVG for years now and I wouldn't change it. By far still the fastest free AV out there.

Kyrakin,
You are a genius...
Who would have thought to look on the Grisoft site for help, well done, worked perfectly.
Problem all gone
Wahooooo
Oh, and I agree on your AVG comment too

Hi,
I have a similar problem with the 'requesting virus scan' in Word, but our computer system uses Sophos Anti Virus......
Any suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks,
Fiona
