Good afternoon everyone (morning still on the west coast of N.A.)
I have a colleague who tried to bring up Microsoft Word and encountered an error and had to bring it up in Safe Mode. She has updated her PC with all the Microsoft Updates available. The only thing we thought it could be is the Corel WordPerfect Suite she had to load for occassional use. She uninstalled it and is still having this error and Safe Mode issue in Word.

Could be a virus or some malware - running in safe mode means that the malware won't run. Use spybot search and destroy as well as antivirus software.
Reinstall office if the problem persists then it is more likely to be the malware
Use XP's roll back to a period prior to this happening

I doubt very much it's any type of Malware or spyware. Search for and delete any normal.dot files. Then restart Word.
Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Any antivirus tool could cause the problem, particularly when the tool expires and is not working. Word requests to scan document but the antivirus tool is not working. That's the cause of the problem. Try the following command if your antivirus tool is NAV: regsvr32 /u officeav.dll
Remeber: run the command in the directory where officeav.dll is located. Usually it's in C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus.
