Word freezes when I click the down arrow

January 2, 2010 at 20:55:20
Specs: Windows XP, P4 2.66

This problem started recently where when I click the down arrow on My Documents, Word freezes. When I go to Task Manager it says that it is not responding. I uninstalled Word and reinstalled it, but it started to freeze again. I waited a few seconds and then it works. I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this or has experienced it but I am wondering if anyone knows what the root cause can be? I imagine it will happen again.
Thanks in advance.

Am I right in thinking that this 'freeze' is occurring when you are trying to open an existing document, and you have the 'Open' dialog box showing?

If this is the case, then I think that your problem is not with Word, but with the Open dialog box which is part of Windows.

It sounds as though the Open dialog box is trying to find a file or folder and it can't find it. It then appears to freeze until the connection time-out expires.

A couple of questions:
Are you on a network.
Have you previously opened or saved any files to a network location perhaps a server, or do you have any documents saved over the internet

If you're trying to save a file, then check and make sure you don't have any disconnected network drives. This will cause a temporary delay in locating the path where you plan to save the file.

I checked My Computer and see that I do have a network drive. The drive is, memory_card on 'Hp000d9d000182' I right clicked on it and selected explore and that's when it came up as a disconnected network drive. I have an HP 2710 that I tried to install as wireless. It worked fine except I always had to enter the key. I am not on a network, as this is a home PC. The internet main feed is into my wife's PC and I am accessing it over a wirless router. I uninstalled the HP software and re-installed it using a USB cable. Is there a way I can uninstall the memory_card on 'Hp000d9d000182? The printer is shut off and it doesn't have a memory card installed on it, so I am totally confused how this happened.

Thanks so much to you both for your replies!

It may be a corrupt registry key.

Go here:

and about half way down the page, find the heading:

"If Word launches fine, but crashes or freezes when you perform some function"

I visited the website and Word launches fine. I am thinking the issue has to do with the disconnected network drive. If I can get rid of it, that might clear up the issue. I chcked control panel to see if it was something I could uninstall but I did't see anything. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd apprecaite it!

I don't know if this will work for your HP memory card.
Double Click on My Computer
In the Window that shows Drives etc. Click on the Menu item -Tools and Select Disconnect Network Drives.
The HP card should show up. Click on the icon/name of the card and click OK.

Thanks for this. I clicked to disconnect it. Is there any way to remove it so that it won't appear in My Computer? I don't recall ever seeing this before and I think it's because I attempted to use the printer as wireless. I uninstalled the HP software and printer and then re-installed it using a USB cable. Maybe something got messed up in the uninstall.

Once disconnected, it shouldn't reconnect, as the memory card is no longer present.
