Word file changes to .dat file

Comment:
We have a workstation that when this person uses Outlook 2002 to send an email with a Word attachment, the receiver gets that file as a .dat file. Any ideas on why the file format is changing? Thanks

It could be a number of reasons but I suspect it is the receiver's server doing it.
They should be able to open the .dat file and extract the .doc file from it.

It doesn't matter where she sends it. It happens when she sends it to anyone, anywhere.

Hi Brian
This could be a problem of TNEF ( a type of mail format )
If Microsoft Outlook Rich Text Format is selected, then the recipient's server may have trouble decoding the format, and will thus convert the mail to DAT format.
Try going to Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
In the Send in this message format list, select Plain Text or HTML, and then click OK. HTML will retain all WORD doc formatting. Plain text is just that...similar to what you see in Notepad.
Summary: I'm having this problem, when opening a word document, combining it into email (with Outlook) and checking the "attach file" box. The file is received with .dat extension. It's the same word document,...
