Word 97 won’t install on Windows 7

January 24, 2010 at 04:56:29
Specs: Windows 7
In Word 97 I’ve added tons of macros and changed the menus and shortcuts to customize Word to my needs – stuff I just can’t do in Office 2007, and that it would take forever to re-establish in Office 2003.

I’ve just upgraded to Win7 Ultimate 64-bit (Danish language-pack). I see that other users have minor problems with User Account Settings in the Win7-Word97 combination, but they still make it work.

I can’t even get the program to install.

I insert my OEM CD-ROM and double-click install.exe. A box tells me that this program is not compatible with my version of Windows. I right-click install.exe to run the cool compatibility test and get the question “In what version of Windows did the program previously function?” It suggests Windows XP SP3 (which is correct), a start button shows up for running the program in compatibility mode with XP SP3, but the button is dead. I try to run install.exe in compatibility mode with a number of other Windows versions. The button is just as dead.

I try another approach: to right-click install.exe in ‘My computer’ and click ‘Problems with compatibility issues’, answer the questions, click the buttons – still dead.

I use a Danish Word 97 OEM (Could the OEM be the problem?)

Please help!

What type of customizations are you referring to? You could always copy the normal.dot file and then import the template into the newer version of Office.

Office 97 originally ran with Windows 95, not Windows XP. Is there a setup.exe file on the CD? If so, try that one.

THANK YOU, Jennifer!
I thought the difference between Word 97 and Office 2003 would be much bigger, and that my many changes in normal.dot therefore would make a mess of the menus and short cuts in Office 2003.

I've done as you suggested. It'll need a little tweaking; but basically, it was very easy and works great.

Oops, Jennifer. It went horribly wrong, I've uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted all templates, and my computer is still messed up.

I ask for help here:
