We recently began converting files from 97 to 2002 and have found that things like quotation marks, check boxes, and other special icons and formatting items have changed form. They now appear in some other language symbol subset and short of re-typing all of these changes, how can I ensure that the formatting will stay the same between these two file formats?!! Help! We have umpteen documents that this is affecting.
Thanks so much.

Here are instructions on how to convert a lists of files. It may help you. You will find the same information in your Word 2002 Help Menu.
Place the documents you want to convert in a single folder.
On the File menu, click New.
In the New Document task pane, under New from template, click General templates.
Click the Other Documents tab.
Double-click Batch Conversion Wizard.
Follow the directions on the screen.
Note:When you save a document in Rich Text Format, it can be opened in many different programs. For example, you can open a Microsoft Word document in Microsoft Works by saving it in Rich Text Format first.
The most commonly used converters are installed with Word by default. If you want to open or save in a format that's not installed by default, you may need to install additional converters.Good luck.
