Word 2011 for Mac and 2003 for PC don't play

March 7, 2011 at 10:54:15
Specs: Macintosh
Despite the much hailed compatibility features in Word for Mac 2011, I cannot put a doc on a flash drive, take it home and work on it on my PC at home which is running Word 2003. I run all the compatibility tests on the Mac and it says no issues will be found, and I'm saving as a doc, not even a docx.

Also when I send a doc from the Mac to a client, who's on a PC, they too are unable to open any of the files I make on the Mac

Ideas? Tips? Consolations?

Not familiar with Mac, but you can probably set the default file format to .doc, or you can re-save individual files on the fly with that format. Or you and your recipients can get a .docx importer, but it doesn't work well on large files.

I think I solved this one. My coworker saved a .docx document with her PC running word 2007, but had, at some point, moved it to her Mac, which is running 2011. She could still open it on her PC, but our boss, who is running 2003 (including the update for 2007 .docx compatability), could not open it. I noticed that the email she sent my boss had a .doc file, rather than the .docx. So i simply changed the file extension to .docx, and voila, it works! (or at least appears to)
