When I open word 2003 my curzor starts at the top left hand corner of the page like there was no footer / header. I have to click view footer/header then close footer/header for the curzor to start in its proper place. (i work in print view)

ANY IDEA's how to stop it starting in the top left hand side corner?

That is the proper place. The position is Page 1, Section 1, 1" from top margin, Line 1, Column 1.

The only way to change that is to indeed view the header information.

However, if you look at the actual position of the cursor when viewing the header, it's still the same.
