Word 2003 - Pictures do not appear

CPU/Ram: 3.8GH 1.5GB
Product: HP a1350n

When I open a document containing a picture in Normal, Print or Web layout view, all I get is the frame; when I open the document in Reading Pane, the picture appears.

What can I do to have it appear in Normal view?

What is selected under Tools, Options, View? Did this work at any time?
