Word 2000 rename problem

I have microsoft word 2000. When I have finished a document and try to rename it it changes into a strange format and will not open! Can anyone advise please? Thanks

How exactly are you renaming it? If you're going into Explorer and renaming it, are you remembering to add the .doc extension?

i think I sussed it. I am saving to desktop and renaming from there..it seems to open ok now. Thanks anyway.
