Word 2000 garbled text

Has anyone ever heard of a problem where a user is typing away on a Word 2000 doc, and suddenly they see a string of square boxes and garbage characters, such as you usually see when a file is saved in a Works file and opened in Word. Sometimes the text is half way down the page, sometimes it's totally gone.
The users in question say they haven't saved it in a works file type or opened a works document and that it happens while in the middle of typing. My guess up to this point has been they hit some kind of shortcut key that did it, but can't figure out what.

Hi,
Do you have any voice recognition software running. This is frequent cause of the type of problem you have.
Search for and delete all copies of the Word template file "normal.dot"

As far as I know they don't have any voice software running. We searched for normal.dot but couldn't find one. We will try uninstalling and reinstalling as well. I think we use SR-1, not SR-2 or SR-3
