MS say it is incompatible with Win 7 but some users have it running fine.

[Similarly I'm running Office 2003 on Win 8.1 with no issues at all despite it being claimed as incompatible].

It might be a matter of the program mix on your computer and/or MS not wanting you to use it or making any attempt to support it. So you are on your own.

My best guess is that it is most likely to run well on a 32 bit machine (if that's what you have). More debateable on a 64 bit, although it least one person seems to have done it.

In summary it is a matter of suck it and see - nobody can be 100%.

For what it's worth,
I have MS Publisher 2000 running on Win 7, 64 Bit machine.
I don't use it very often, but have done simple things like greeting cards and such.
All my other Office software is 2007, I kept Publisher because the 2007 package did not include it.

My two cents.

I am running Office XP (2002) under Windows 7 64 bit without any problem at all. I prefer this version of Office since I am not comfortable with the ribbon interface introduced with Office 2007.

Be aware you have to install a lot of updates after the first setup and some tweaks are required too. Anyway Outlook is not compatible, so a different mail client must be selected, but that is not an issue.

Yes IVO, wasn't it all nice and clear before that ribbon came along? Some improvements are just NOT. The ribbon changes with what you select whereas the old fashioned format stayed the same along the top all of the time.

Not sure about Outlook on Win7 but Outlook 2003 runs happily on my Win 8.1 (or as well as it did on any previous OS). Since the whole of Office 2003 is decreed as unsuitable for Win 8.1 I really can't be certain whether Office 2000 would be OK on Win 7 - or maybe you know something that I don't (there's always scope for that).

While many opinions about the usability of legacy versions of Office are widely positive, I strongly suggest the OP makes a try; if Office 2000 doesn't work, you can uninstall without any harm.
