Solved w7 excel 2003 opens two seperate versions that are not linke

Specs: W7
As spreadsheets are not linked data is not updated. When I open one spreadsheet, then the second one by using the "File/Open" command, the sheets are linked. If I open two spreadsheets from two icons on the desktop, the second spreadsheet is not shown in the "Window" drop down menu and the sheets are not linked.I can update values using "Edit Links".

If you want to preserve the link between the two spreadsheets, you must open the second one from within the Excel that is already running.

When you open two s/sheets from two shortcuts, you are actually opening each of them in two different instances of Excel. One knows nothing about the other so you can't expect them to be linked under those circumstances.

Apart from that, you are wasting RAM having two instances of Excel running. With any Office application you should always open second and subsequent documents from within the application that's already running, not from a shortcut.

Thanks, this is true. However the spreadsheet are used by staff not familiar with Excel. I have made it easy for them to use the files and I have not the same problem with another installation of Excel on another W7 laptop.
