charts embedded in a word document, 'pasted as
link' from excel s/s will not update when word
document is accessed; automatically or
manually. all settings in word have been
confirmed. running office 2003. any ideas as to
why this functionality is not longer available?

re: any ideas as to why this functionality is not longer available
When you say this functionality is not longer available are you implying that it used to work - in this specific document?
Does it still work in other documents?
It could be nothing more than a busted link that needs to rebuilt.

that is correct, it used to work and has since stopped. regarding
the possibility of the link needing to be reestablished, we are
forced to do so anytime the chart requires updating. the chart is
deleted, updated in excel and pasted as a fresh link.

Not sure if you answered this question:
Does the functionality still work in other documents?
New questions:
Do new charts in the same Word document work?
Does the same chart work in other Word documents?
I just trying to come up with things for you to try to possibly narrow it down to a corrupt Word doc or a corrupt Excel file or a broken application.

thanks so much for your interest in this issue. i'll talk further
with the direct end user and find out additional details for you.thanks again.

went through a few tests and this is what we came to:
this problem is consistent across the board in any word
document that is linked to any of our s/s.
when a chart is pasted as a linked, excel chart object, the
link is active and updates perform as expected.
however, once you adjust the text wrapping effect (ie. behind
text, in front of text, etc.) for that chart, you lose the ability to
update the links both manually and autuomatically, requiring
the charts to be deleted, updated in excel and re-pasted.
Hopefully this will give the additional detail needed.
Thank you!

Sorry, I'm unable to duplicate your problem.
I copied a chart in Excel, did a PasteSpecial...Paste Link in a Word document and then used the Format Object...Layout tab to change the Behind Text, In Front Of Text, etc. settings and had no problem updating the chart afterwards.
