Comment:

I have a XP client on a server-no Exchange-running Outlook 2000. My Outlook files are on my personal drive on the network. This arrangement has always worked until this morning.
Upon entering Outlook I received the error "Unable to open default enail files. The file outlook.pst is in use and could not be accessed".

I rebooted the PC and received the same result. FYI-my old .pst file is just over a gigabyte in size.

I have renamed my old outlook.pst and directed Outlook to make a new personal file. Of course now I don't have any of my old emails, files, or contacts. How can I get access to my old .pst file?

In Outlook, File, Open, Personal Folders File. Browse to the path of your old pst.
