I have an older PC with Office 2000 installed on it, and I need to transfer it over to a new PC. Is there a way to do this? I have the activation key. Thanks!

I think it would be nearly impossible to transfer the installation from one computer to another. You should have no trouble using the original CDs and your activation key to install Office from scratch on your new computer.

The only thing is that I do not have the original disks.

The only thing you can do is borrow Office 2000 instal CD from friends or co-workers and use your own product key to install it.

I can do that? I thought that each CD had its own key, and the CD only recognized the one key that came with it.

I may be wrong but my reasonings is based on two criterias. First the key is supplied independent of the CD. Second, it will be very costly for any software company to individually implant unique product key on each CD they sell. So go ahead and try my suggestion.

As long as the discs you borrow are the same version (Professional, Small Business, Standard, etc.) you should have no trouble using your key with the fresh installation.

Good Luck!

p.s. I've always wondered what happens to all of the original discs that people lose? Operating system discs, application discs, restore discs, driver discs, etc. Must be a huge pile of 'em somewhere... Next to the piles of unmatched socks and missing jigsaw puzzle pieces?
