tmp files on the LAN

Office Suite set up on LAN node Win2k PC's. Document files stored on a company LAN file server. Does anyone know a way to set the location of the office created tmp files so that they stay on the local hard drive, instead of creating them along with the actual document file, out on the network drive file server? I have been chasing this one down for over 3 years. In Word Perfect, in the options, location of files section, there was a field where you could simply set the tmp files path to STAY ON THE LOCAL DRIVE! With Office, it puts them out there on a network drive along side your actual document. Imagine that - writing tmp files to a network drive and no way to change it that I have found yet. Office networked would probably gain 30% in speed if tmp files could be set to local drives only. With 1000 to 1500 files open at once on my Netware file servers, it does not need to be wasting time and resources with Office tmp files on the network. Wish I knew how to fix it. Any ideas?
