I need some suggestions from anyone who has a very good knowledge of various software about what programs I should use for a basic PC designed for basic software operation and communication.

Any info will be useful. Thanx!

From,

Vi.

"basic software operation and communication"

That really doesn't mean anything. If you are using Windows, then you can use the computer right out of the box. It has a browser, email client, and word processor as well as other utilities. The software you use will depend on the "specific" tasks you will want to perform.

Michael is exactly right. What exactly is your goal?

My goals for the PC are use them to communicate with other computers on LAN's and WAN's.

Vi, again not very descriptive. Communicate in what way exactly??? Do you want to just connect to a network and access shares on the other machines? If so, all you need is to make sure the machine has a functioning network card.

Yes I do want to connect to a network and
access shares on the other machines but I
also want access to computers on other
LAN's. Anyway, I've asked a relative of
mine about it and they've explained to me
what I need. Thanx, anyway! :D

Well, I explained to him that I just want a
basic idea of what kinda software I would
need and he told me that if I'm going to be
using Windows XP than all I need is
Microsoft office to get me going and I just
need a webcam and MSN if I want to talk to
some1 face-to-face. lol Really, the
solution was so simple + I didn't think of
it! :)

You mentioned communication with other LANs. That would imply that you're on a LAN and that you indeed want to connect to other networks. If what your relative told you is exactly what you need, then "communication with other LANs and WANs" is not your goal.

You basically want an Internet ready PC and a webcam. There are tons of sites you can access without having to download an email client, and many ways to use your cam. We certainly would have had many suggestions if we had understood that what you wanted was indeed so simple.

Glad you got it figured out, but just an FYI; you don't need MSN to talk face-to-face. There are many other options.

Have you decided what type of Internet access you're going to purchase? Of what brand of computer?

Not yet, but I think I'll discuss this with
my relative. He has a way of understanding
my jibberish. :) Thanx for the help anyway!

If you don't want Trojan or something of the sort barging in on you, put up a firewall!!!
