I have a user that has this problem. When she opens Outlook and creates a new message and tries to begin typing in the name of a contact, Outlook doesn't automatically suggest the name she's typing. She has to manually enter the name, or select it from the global address book. Once she has sent a message to a user, Outlook will then "remember" the contact the next time she sends a message to them, but only if she leaves outlook open. Once she closes outlook, the same thing will happen the next time. Does that make sense? I've looked quite a bit online for a solution, but can't seem to find anything. Any help is appreciated.

When addressing the email, she should use either the FileAs entry or part of the Full Name entry.
The automatic name checking is a different feature. It keeps track of nicknames or email addys entered and is configured in Tools, Options, E-mail options, Advanced. I believe it is disabled by default.

Under Tools, Options, E-mail options, Advanced Email Options I find two possible related items:
1. Automatic Name Checking
2. Suggest names while completing To, Cc and Bcc fields.I did not find "Auto complete" which is what I thought I would find.

I have tried ticking and unticking.
I can get to a point where it works but when I shut down outlook and reopen it I am back to stage one with no names being created.

That's why then. The Automatic Name Checking entries are contained within the local profile. If you're not caching those, then the file will be deleted, thus requiring a new one to be created each time the user logs in.

I understand what you are saying but all our PC's are set up the same way on exchange and they are all OK.
I have 2 PC's with this problem both the same make so I was thinking it has to be somethng in the initial setup or how the local profiles are setup.
Anything I have found on the net re this suggests deleting the *.NK2 file in the Outlook folder but neither of these PC's have a *.NK2 file.
