Trying to install SP2 on two machines, got the CD from Microsoft (for free!). Like to upgrade Office XP Professionel.

Won't go no matta what. It goes with Windows Installer, but after a few minutes, it says that some file has "been patched by some other means" and will not allow you to go past that, during install of XP Service Pack 1. XP Service Pack 2 will not install of course because SP1 isn't installed!

driving me nuts, what going on? Same thing happened on both my personal W2K SP4 machine and a Windows XP Pro machine running no service packs (will put SP1 when I get the CD from M$)

You shouldn't have to install SP1 first in order to install SP2. More recent Service packs are all inclusive.

I haven't had any trouble installing SP2 that I downloaded.

Have you tried just downloading the SP from Microsoft's website and then running that file?
