I don't really think this will help but in Outlook Tools, Options, Mail Delivery and under Dial Up Options, make sure there is no check next to 'Don't download messages larger then xxxKb' or adjust it.
I am using Outlook 98 so it may be different.

Unfortunately this box was not ticked. This appears to be to control incoming attachments only. Thanks for trying though.

100k isn't very large. Does the email window close when you click send? Are you running on a network (from work) or is it a stand-alone machine?

Nothing happens at all when I click on send or exit. My PC is networked with my son's only.

Problem solved! What was needed was an update to Office XP. I have installed Service Pack 3 and my e-mail now works fine. Thanks for the advice and interest.
