Selecting text in Word 2003

My Word has just changed its behaviour when selecting text. If I click anywhere in a document I want the cursor to appear at the end of the line I'm on, right? But what's happening is if I click anywhere in the whitespace of a document (ie not clicking in the middle of a line), it will select the whole line or paragraph. This is irritating as I now have to always click exactly on the last character in a line to get my cursor on that line. Also, if I click inside a table cell it will select the entire contents of the cell rather than automatically put the cursor at the end of the line.
I have tried fixing it with various selections in Tools:Options:Edit but none of these options have fixed the problem.
