This has probably been asked millions of times before but none of the answers I can find on line seem to solve the problem. My new machine has Vista and now whenever I close down Word (2003) or its associated programs, without saving the document, I'm told that "Word cannot save or create this file....." and refers me to "Normal.dot". It then asks me whether I want to save those changes (even if there have been none) and when I click on "Yes", guess what? I'm told.... "Word cannot save or create this file....." At this point I usually scream and throw something. Everything I can find (which I can understand) refers to Add-ins and Macros and I can find no Add-ins and no related Macros. Can someone suggest an idea (in relatively simple English please) to remove this frustrating rigmarole of shutting Word down

I would start with Detect & Repair.

On the tool bar:

Help

Detect & Repair

See if that helps.

Search for the file and see if the Read-Only attribute is checked. If so, remove it.
