Comment:

I am networked to an older machine running W95 and Office 4.3 with Excel 5.0. This machine does basic administrative work and is more than adequate for this function.

However, from time to time I have cause to access the files on this machine from the newer one running Excel 2002. The files load OK and entries are made without problem, but the annoyance begins when saving the file.

A text balloon pops up reminding me that the file was an Excel 5/95 workbook. To save in the latest format click yes otherwise no for the current format.

So the file can be worked on in the older machine I naturally click "No"

A further balloon then pops up discussing compatibility of features, this time requiring a "Yes" click to proceed with the save without changing the format.

To further complicate things on occasion the questions will appear in a pop up window instead of a balloon.

The problem is that a wrong click on one of these questions means the file is unreadable to the older machine.

Can this annoying feature be turned off so that the file saves by default in its original format.

Thanks,

Theo

I do not know if they can be turned off but you might try going to Excel Tools, Options, Transition tab (I'm on Excel 97 at the moment so it may be different) and select to save the files as "Microsoft Excel Workbook" or one of the other options that is for 95 workbook as the default.
