|I don't know of any "refresh" feature. I have always done it the same way you do it, by basically starting over. I just asked my assistant who does mail merges all the time and she doesn't know of any way to refresh the source either.|
That said, neither of us are Word experts and there aren't that many Words experts that hang around in this forum. I don't mean this to sound harsh, but please, go someplace else. ;-)
In other words, there are a few forums directly dedicated to Word where MS MVP's hang out. Perhaps they know of a better way to accomplish your goal.
