protect cell on Excel version 2010

January 20, 2011 at 14:33:05
Specs: Windows 7
I am trying to protect some cells on my 2010 excel worksheet. When I select the spreadsheet and goto the review tab and select the protect sheet tab, then I can't select a cell and go to the home page cell format button and unprotect the cell...the operation is not selectable. If I select the cells I want to lock and then goto the format tab and select the lock cell button, and then goto the review panel and protect the sheet, I cannot do data entry in the cells that I didn't want to lock. Any assitance will be greatly appreciated.

All cells are Locked by default, but that means nothing until the sheet is Protected.

The standard process to Lock & Protect only a specific set of cells is as follows:

1 - Click above the row numbers to select the entire sheet
2 - On the Home ribbon, pull down Format and select Format Cells
3 - Choose the Protection Tab and uncheck Locked
4 - Select the cells that you want to Lock & Protect
5 - On the Home ribbon, pull down Format and either select Lock Cell or select Format Cells...Protection Tab and click Locked
6 - Finally, Protect the sheet either via the Review ribbon or on the Home Ribbon under the Format drop down...Protect Sheet. Make sure you choose the Protection options that fit your needs.
