Although some functions will correctly evaluate cells and ignore text strings, as a general rule for mathematical operations, both cells should have numbers,

If your using arithmetic operators, plus sign, minus sign, etc.
try using a function instead

=SUM() for addition
=PRODUCT() for multiplication
=QUOTIENT() for division

Hi,

You could insert a column between B and C
In the new column C use (in row 1) =VALUE(B1)
Column C will now contain values.
Now do your calculations using columns A and C
