pathname length limitations

I've just learned that all Microsoft Office 200x products (Word, Excel, Office, Powerpoint) have a 218-254 character limit on the length of a pathname (ie the filename including the drive letter/UNC and all folders, everything from the "c:\" or "\\share" to the extension). Isn't that really annoying?!
I'm wondering if anyone knows if this applies to absolutely every version of Office (including the latest, whatever that is)? How about OpenOffice?
Are there similar limits for Windows 2000/XP/Vista in general (besides those that apply to CDs)?

It's a Windows limitation (and not an Office limitation), so I'd say it's in every version of Office for Windows for the foreseeable 32-bit future.

Well, in ?! years of using a computer I've never had a problem such as you describe, perhaps I'm well practiced in using a sensible file/folder naming regime.
It's not that I can't remember things as I get older, it's just that my hard drive's full.
