paste link worksheet into another file

Microsoft Excel 2003 (full product)
September 23, 2010 at 09:38:37
Specs: Windows XP
Process I am currently using that has worked in the past but for some reason is not working now.
Open the 2 excel files.
Go to the source worksheet and click the top left corner to select the whole worksheet, then select copy
Go to the target worksheet in another file, click the top left cell and select past special, then past link.
In the past this has copied right away and there are formulas leading back to the source in all the appropriate cells. Now when I try this same procedure, it takes forever and if I go to task manager it says that the source and target are not responding.
Can anyone help?

Have you recently upgraded from 2003 to 2007, because:

2003 Worksheet size 65,536 rows by 256 columns
2007 Worksheet size 1,048,576 rows by 16,384 columns

Selecting the whole worksheet is a bit excessive in my view.

It takes a lot more memory to link a whole sheet, even if a large portion of the cells are empty, then it does to link just a section.

Excel memory limits:
