I have just imported my mail from OE 6 to outlook 2000. I then set p auto archiving and archived all mail in my outlook.pst folder. The end result was that I now have an archive.pst file with all my mail, and an outlook.pst file that has all my folders, and no mail. My problem is that the outlook.pst file is still like 330 MB. If I check the size in Outlook, it shows it only to be like 22k ... which makes sence .. as there is no mail in the outlook.pst file .. but when I look in windwos explorer, I see that the size is huge.
Please help.
Thanks,
Peter

Have you emptied the Deleted Items and Sent Items folders? Have you compacted the pst file to decrease its size?

I have no mail in any of my folders. This includes sent and deleted items ... I just don't understand. I know for sure that out look is using this particular pst file because when I rename it outlook gives an error.

Peter, have you compacted the pst file???
Bryan, I don't believe the Compact pst option is available in 98. At least, I haven't found it..

I have not compacted anything ... but my point is, I don't think I should have too ... there is nothing in it ... the mail folders are empty ... I archived everything to another pst file ... so my question is, why is the main outlook.pst file still so large, when there is no mail in it ??
peter

Because the space that the removed emails occupied still exists until you compact that unused space.

P.S. Thanks Jen

I am such a tool. Thanks for the help .... I was really spaced out that day ... I was not even thinking that the mail was in a single file, and that there were just references that were getting deleted .... That makes a load of sence. It also makes Outlook lok retarted. Think about this ... If you delete all your mail, the mail gets coppied to your trash, and the references to the mail in your inbox go away (thus making it look deleted, but of course it is still there). So now you have two coppies of your mail .... sort of anyway. Then you delete it from your trash .. and yep, it is still there. So in fact, when you delete mail, you actually increase your mailbox ... how retarted is that ... you would think that Outlook would at least auto compact on exit.
Thanks again for the help.
Peter

The size of you PST file WILL NOT decrease, it has been made that way. Like all Microsoft product (eg. acees DB .mdb that you need to manually compact).
P.S. : This is the worst forum i have ever seen, took me 3time to post this message:)
