I deleted a program from my laptop called StyleXP (it allows you to change the appearance of Windows XP by using custom designed themes) and, for some reason, it changed the desktop icon for Outlook XP (2002) to that generic icon Windows uses when it is unable to identify a program or file. The icon still opens Outlook if I double-click on it and, if I right-click on it, it still opens the window labeled "Mail Setup - Outlook" that shows "E-mail Accounts", "Data Files" and "Show Profiles", but the actual icon is still not the correct Outlook icon. I have the same problem if I delete the icon and use the "Detect and Repair" option in Help (I place a check mark in "Restore my shortcuts while repairing"). It puts the outlook icon back on my desktop, but it is still that same generic Windows icon. Can anyone help? Thank you!
Dennis

Try right clicking on the icon and selecting Properties, Change Icon.
Browse to the Office folder, locate the outlook .exe file and select it to see what icons it contains.
When you select the one you want then click Apply and Ok.I don't have Outlook so I can not give specifics.

Thanks, but the regular Outlook icon I am trying to get back does not display any properties dialogs allowing you to change the actual icon. When you right-click and select properties, it displays settings dialogs for your inbox/mail program.

Yeah... I just did the same thing... clicked "OK" just as I realized it wasn't a 'shortcut' but a 'special' icon like the Internet Exlorer. It said "The Outlook Desktop Icon provides special functionality and we recommend that you do not remove it." Oops !! Well... check here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281085/
I have Office XP and WinXP-Pro and followed the directions Very Carefully (registry editing) and it is back now. In some programs it would just be a toggle -- sheesh!!
