Comment:

I’ve been using Outlook 2000 since I installed it on my new PC in March this year. The install is from MS Office 2000 Professional. I’m using XP Pro.

I recently got a Dell Axim PDA that came with Outlook 2002 and a synchronisation programme to sync the PDA (MS Pocket PC 2003 Premium) with Outlook.

Install went OK and the Sync works with no apparent flaws. The next time I switched on the PC to use Outlook it said that Outlook said it hadn’t closed properly and would now open in ‘Safe Mode’ (this is Outlook safe mode, not Windows XP safe mode).

Outlook would then load up. All my contacts, folders, calendar were there and it downloaded my new e-mails. However, the ‘Deleted items’ and ‘Sent items’ folders were blank. Outlook said the location for the file was not valid, and an address bar appeared at the top of Outlook with a really long string of numbers and letters. This address bar only appeared when I looked at either the ‘Deleted items’ or ‘Sent items’ folders, but not for my other folders.

Restarting Outlook and rebooting didn’t resolve it.

I uninstalled Outlook 2002 and re-installed,... no luck. Then I uninstalled Outlook 2000 and Office 2000 Professional and reinstalled the lot. No joy.

Finally, today I uninstalled Office 2000 and Outlook 2002 and Norton AV, Rebooted, Defraged the C Drive and reinstalled office.

Outlook still doesn’t open.

Each time I started Outlook I got an error message and Outlook would close down (no safe mode option). The error message report that Windows sends back to MS states:

Error signature
AppName: Outlook.exe
AppVer: 10.0.2627.1
ModName: mso.dll
ModVer:10.0.2625.0
Offset: 0001bcf5

Looking at the technical info the error report contains (first few lines):

Exception Information
Code: 0x00000fb0
Flags:0x00000000
Record: 0x00000000c0000005
Address:0x0000000000000000

System Info:
Windows NT 5.0 Build 2600
CPU Vendor code (etc etc)

Module 1
Outlook.exe.
Image Base: 0x30000000
Image Size: 0x0000a000
Checksum: 0x0000cc99

(there is a lot more info that I can transcribe, if it will help diagnose the problem, Unfortunately I cannot cut and paste this info)

It goes on to Module 2
Ntdll.dll

…..etc

Module 3
Kernel32.dll

…..etc

and then a lot of hex data.

Once the report has gone to MS, my PC offers to open the programme in ‘safe mode’ again. However, this time instead of opening Outlook in safe mode I get this message instead.

‘Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. The key ‘DisplayName’ is either missing or has an incorrect value. [File C:\Programme Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10\Forms\1033\SECREC(2).CFG, Section Description]

I've even tried a system restore point to before the date I installed Outlook 2002 but I still get the above error.

I’ve done a search on Google for the DisplayName and SECREC(2) error and have found some hits relating to MS Office but not Outlook.

I’m really stuck and would appreciate any help.

Have you tried renaming your pst file and creating a new one with the same path as the original? This is just a simple suggestion, but it just might work.

i suggest the problem is accordin with ur identification in XP. Did u install ur office logged as Admin in XP..? i think, like in every winnt based os, u can have this kind of prob, cuz identities duplicates some folders and sometimes progs can't find them and loose datas. Of course, u can try it , it's risk free to uninstall it and reinstall as admin, and next relog with ur usual user.

Thanks Guys.
Jennifer: I have tried renaming the pst file. I also tried backing upi the whole pst file to another drive and starting off from scratch.

TAXI: I know it's not good practice, but I tend to only log onto the PC as 'Administrator' anyway, so dont think it's this.

I found a few things...When you uninstalled, did you also delete the Registry Keys?

Have you installed any Office Service Packs?
