Outlook won't delete aol messages

I have two e-mail accounts that download to Outlook:gmail and aol. Outlook will delete and remove gmail e-mails when I delete them, but with the aol account it just fades the writing and puts a line through the title in the inbox. So the inbox for aol is cluttered with a bunch of strike-thru subject headings. Any ideas to get them out of the inbox?
