Outlook Spelling Check Unsuccessful

When trying to send a message with Outlook 2003 with the spell check set to check before sending, the following message is displayed: "The spelling check was unsuccessful. Do you want to send anyway?"
Manual and real time spell checking seem to work fine. When I *do not* have Word set as the editor there is no problem. Also there is no problem using the spell check in Word.
