Outlook XP. E-mail recipient is repeatedly receiving the same e-mail. However, the e-mail stays in the Outbox, appearing to never be sent. When clicking on the message to delete it, the following error occurs "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook."

Restarting Outlook doesn't help, and I can't find anything in the MSKB. Help!!!

Thanks...

The reason that you are receiving the same e-mails is that Outlook is set to leave the e-mails on the server (i.e. not deleting the e-mails after downloading) There are a couple of possible reasons why you are unable to send e-mails. Check to see if your SMTP server settings are correct. Outlook may also be trying to connect to an IMAP server that your ISP doesn't even have.

No. All settings are correct. The e-mail is not being left on the server after recipient downloads it. It's actually staying in the sender's Drafts and Outbox and repeatedly sending.

The problem has been documented by Microsoft for all versions of Outlook except 2002. The fixes Microsoft suggests don't work. That's why I posted the question here.

Thanks anyway. :)

I am having a similar problem on my work's Win2K/Office2K/Outlook2K machine.

I send the email, it goes to the Outbox and stays there. If I open the message the information bar states that it has not been sent.

The recipients do recieve it so I only send it the one time so they do not get it again.(They complained)

I emailed our IS support group over a week ago but they have not sent anyone to fix it.

If and when they do I will post the findings/results of that visit.

Bryan

Okay. Here's what I found. This problem is caused (according to MS) by creating and saving an e-mail in the Drafts folder. Then, reopening it and editing it and/or sending it.

What we ended up doing, since MS's fixes either didn't work or weren't feasible, was to take the original pst file, archive it, delete the items in the Drafts and Outbox (in the original pst), then I compacted the original to significantly reduce its size.

I had created a new active pst file so the user could have access to his mail while I worked on his other pst file. Then, I copied his Original (aka Storage) pst file and the archive file to his data location and just added those two data files to his window. So, he's using three pst files instead of one, huge 2GB pst.

Better organization, new backup procedure, and the user's happy. :)
