Outlook Express slow to delete

This computer has been running Outlook Express (v. 6) without a hitch. Recently, however, it decided to take an impossibly long time to delete messages (~1 min!). It is still quick at loading initally.
I've checked for spyware, viruses etc. with nothing out of the ordinary appearing/delt with.
There are 1000+ messages in the inbox, but its been like this for years without a problem. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks Jennifer, I've compacted before and I just did it again manually. It did have a small impact, but didn't take it back to the speed it was at prior to when the troubles began.
