I have a second PC with Win98 and Office XP installed. I started using MS Outlook which I think is far better than Outlook Express, the one I used before. So I made a backup just copying every folder within a subdirectory that I called "OE backup". Now I need a mail I received thru OE, so I tried to import my backup but with no results. I activated OE once more and copied back the data I backed to its directory, but no avail. Where must this data be moved to in order to reach them thru OE, please?

From OE, File\Export\Messages\ will export your messages directly into Outlook.
Another important option to get fo Outlook is a backup, which must be downloaded and installed seperately.
Search for "pfbackup.exe" on Google. The 1st listing refers to Outlook 2003 but also works with the rest of them, or here is the actual address for the M$ download.

With that installed you can backup and restore from backups.
