I have outlook installed on a new machine, and I imported a .pst from my old machine which contains all the mails (I keep copy of mail on the server too), now the new outlook is trying to re-download all the mails again from start. How can this be resolved? Pls. dont ask me to remove copies from the server, as that can't be done. I need to know how the old outlook used to know how much data was already downloaded and how much needs to be downlaoded? Some registry keys?

It doesn't matter if that information is stored in the Registry or not. The settings wouldn't carry over to the new machine because you have a completely new Outlook profile.
Why can't you delete the messages from the server?
