How are you connecting to the server? Via POP3 or via IMAP?

If POP, check the last tab on the account settings and there should be a message retention selection that tells it to delete messages after retrieval.

Because you are getting an error and it is not retrieving all of the messages, it may be causing the server not to delete any of them. Have you ever been able to retrieve all of the messages without getting an error? If not, there may be something else wrong with your settings.

Also, can you access the messages via web mail to the server and see if you can remove some messages that have already been downloaded to your local outlook PST from there.

Let me know if any of these suggestions work for you or if you need more assistance.

Thanks for the suggestions. This happens about every 3 months. it will go days without receiving messages. last time i remember changing the setting, (delete received messages from server) but i couldn't find how to do it again. This time it went 5 days without receiving, the last day it would not send, then suddenly it started cycling through, first received 5, then failed, started over, received the same 5 and another 10 or so, failed, then finally after doing this several times, cycled through the whole list and...problem solved. i don't think that i did anything that changed it, it just happened. it has been working fine for the last 2 days. i don't know why this happens though as it is random and this was about the 4th or 5th time it happened.

Sounds like it may be a server side issue. I would try talking to the support department of your mail host and seeing if they have been having issues.
