My PST file is 2.1GB. I know that is over the threshold so I finally took some time to archive. After an hour or so of archiving, I went back to check the size of the new Outlook PST and saw that the file was the EXACT same size as before the archiving (I now have a 1.6GB Archive file now).

What did I do wrong?

If you are using 2003 outlook, your file size limit is not 2 gb but about 18-20 gb.

After archiving, you will start the compact feature in outlook to compress your pst file.

Does the compact feature run automatically after archiving or do I have to start that somehow?

Thanks for the followup...

If your pst file was 2.1 Gig, then you must be using 2003, as previous versions will not allow for the file size to reach 2 Gig.

To Compact:

Close Outlook
Right-click on the Outlook icon (not shortcut)
Properties
Data Files
Select the file to Compact
Settings
Compact Now

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.
