I have been using MS Office 2000 Professional SR1 since it became available - it does all that I want and I do not want to migrate to any later version. When I replaced my PC a couple of years ago, I used the same installation disks to put the package on my new computer (running XP and having 2Gb RAM) since when it has worked fine. About a month ago, I started to get a few niggles with Outlook and then it refused to open. I eventually tracked the source of that problem down to an oversized .pst file - of course, MS go to great lengths to tell all users about the size limit of the .pst file and constantly warn you when you approach that limit, don't they ... NOT!! Anyway, a few days ago, I managed to track down the MS tool that allows the .pst file to be truncated to an acceptable size, and another tool for repairing the damaged 'ends' after truncating - they were hidden deep in their vaults where nobody could find it and thereby deduce that that MS know about the problem but keep quiet about it. Although it took ages to load up, I got Outlook to run again and did a great deal of internal pruning to bring the .pst file down to about 55% of the newly-found limit. For a few days, apart from the slow start, all was OK. I am the Secretary of a number of voluntary groups and I have separate email sub-accounts for each. Yesterday, I attempted to send a reply to an email that had come in on one of those sub accounts but got an immediate 'bounce' that there no available transport. I went to Tools intending to open 'Accounts' but that option wasn't there. After puzzling things through, I decided to copy all the MS Office configuration files (templates etc and the repaired pst file) and put them out of the way on another disk. Then, via the Control Panel, remove MS Office and followed that by deleting all the MS Office and Outlook folders that remained(including under Docs & Settings, Application Data and Local Settings). Then, using the same installation disks as before, I then reinstalled Office, using the customized option and 'Run All from My PC' sub-option. On completion and reboot, I tested all the packages and all fired up OK ... except Outlook, which requested that the CD be inserted. I ignored the request and Outlook fired up reasonably quickly BUT there was still no Tools/Accounts option as there had been previously (Help guided me through Tools/Services/Add to create the mail accounts) and there is no Send As option - even replies are sent under the default email account, reegardless of the addressee of the message which is being replied to. And although all my contacts were available, my Address Book appears empty. The spooky part of this is that although I deleted all those folders having moved the configuration files onto another disk, the reinstalled Word and Excel are using the correct Templates but, like the Contacts in Outlook, I haven't restored any of those files I moved away - so, apart from any folder that is labelled MS Office or Outlook, where else does Office hide these files? And what has happened to the version of Outlook I've been using all these years - where has Tools/Accounts gone? The only good thing to come out of this is that I located the slow start problem - a corrupt outcmd.dat file.
